- Wimauma, Florida, Hillsborough County
Wimauma received its name from Captain C.H. Davis in 1902. Davis helped in the establishment of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad that connected Turkey Creek to Bradenton. It was Davis's intent to build a town midway between the two depots. He named the town by taking the first letters off of the names of his daughters, Willie, Maude and Mary and centered the town around Lake Tiger which is now known as Lake Wimauma. Wimauma, Florida was incorporated in 1925. In 1930 the city of Wimaumas government stopped functioning, and by 1993 it was discovered that since 60 years had passed without a city government the incorporation was no longer valid.
Today, Wimauma, Florida is the home to over 4,000 residents. Although Wimauma may have been a rural community at one point, there are many plans for development in this area which provides for an array of real estate options. With the small town, 'old Florida' charm the residents of this area have fought to preserve, Wimauma makes for the perfect environment to raise a family.
