- Valrico, Florida, Hillsborough County
Valrico, Florida, Spanish for "valley of gold" received its name from William G. Tousey, a professor at Tufts College in Boston, in the 1880's. In the 1890's, the railroad began coming to the area and Tousey and his colleagues from New England started to create the beautiful town that is known as Valrico. With businesses, a railroad depot, a post office and dreams of a bustling community the 'valley of gold' began to prosper. When the big freeze came in 1895, Valrico suffered and some of those dreams were laid to rest. Valrico Lake, once known to locals as 'Long Pond', was the home to the cotton plantations that thrived in this area pre-Civil War. By the early 1900's, the town of Valrico once again began to grow and the lake area became know for its nearly 30,900 acres of citrus groves.
According to the 2000 census, Valrico, Florida is the home to over 6,000 residents and MacDill Air Force Base which provides a home to many soldiers, sailors and Marines, alike. Located only 15 minutes from Tampa, Valrico provides all the amenities of big city life while surrounded in the beauty of 'old Florida'.
