- Thonotassa, Florida, Hillsborough County
The name Thonotassa comes from the Indian words meaning Lake of Flints. This name was giving by the Indians in honor of the deposits of flint stone that were found in the area. But it wasn't until 1870, after the Civil War ended, that Thonotassa, Florida's history began. George W. Adams, an executive with Singer Sewing Machine Company, relocated to the area from Connecticut with his wife. Adams homesteaded around 300 acres at the north end of Lake Thonotassa and planted a large commercial citrus grove, that later proved to be vital to the growth of the area. In 1879, a gentleman named William Hazen relocated to the area from Ohio and purchased 2,000 acres adjacent to Lake Thonotassa. Hazen then convinced Henry Plant to extend his railroad from Tampa to Thonotassa, which in turn benefited the citrus industry and tourism greatly in the area. Hazen built a luxury hotel and gave it the name "Lakeview", which burned down in 1969. During the lifetime of Lakeview Hotel, tourists would come to enjoy the galas, horse drawn carriage rides around Lake Thonotassa and spend weekends celebrating life. Hazen is known to be largely responsible for the success of Thonotassa, Florida.
