Ruskin, Florida was founded by Dr. George McAnelly Miller and his family in 1906.  Miller had the dream of building a college community in a spot that would be free from any outside influence, and the subtropical, coastal region that is now known as Ruskin appealed greatly to him.  Miller made an agreement with his three brother in-laws, N.E. Dickman, L.L. Dickman and A.P. Dickman to trade his property in Missouri for 12,000 acres in Florida.  Only a few years after their agreement, the Dickman brothers relocated and joined Miller and his family.  Miller lived out his dream and built his college community, however, at the start of World War I many of the students were shipped off to war.  Dr. Miller passed over in 1919 and ironically, a fire ravaged most of the college buildings.  

According to the 2000 census the population of Ruskin consisted of 8,321 residents.  This population almost doubles during the winter months when tourists retreat to the warmth and sunshine that West Central Florida provides.  Ruskin is home to the Annual Ruskin Tomato and Heritage Festival!  Fully equipped with an Antique Tractor Show, Tomato Queen, Bluegrass and Country music, butterfly tent and fried green tomatoes, the Tomato and Heritage Festival will fill your day with laughter and memories.
